"Bunion operation"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 )

(as the patient),

In March 23 I had a bunion surgery from the Royal Hospital in Glasgow. Was told to wait a year for healing but new something was wrong well before year was up and was told the discomfort I was experiencing was part of the healing.

I am still in discomfort with my toes numb and tingling and tightness, went back to see the doctor after the year and they said they couldn’t understand why I was going through this and has referred me for a 2nd opinion, which I am still waiting on nearly a year later.

I have looked things up on the internet and I have nerve damage which I am on  2 sets of tablets from my local GP, there is no case as I signed a form before surgery so looking forward I am left with a limp if I am on my feet for half the day, walking on uneven ground is a no go as it sends sharp pain up my leg my doctor told me nerve damage was not repairable.

I wish I had kept my bunion, at least I could cope with that pain.

Dear gibson621,

Thank you for taking time to share your feedback with us, and I'm very sorry to learn that you are having ongoing issues causing pain and worry, further to your surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary last year. I understand you are currently waiting on a second opinion, and unfortunately this can take some time. In the first instance I would encourage you to go back to your GP and update them on the level of pain and discomfort you are experiencing as they should be able to provide options to help you manage this, and also check on the status of your existing referral for a second opinion.

Information about the referral process to our orthopaedic outpatient service can be found on our web page: Orthopaedic Outpatients - NHSGGC but you may also wish to contact the orthopaedic outpatient department to enquire about the status of your referral for a second opinion: you can email the department on:

GRI.OrthopaedicOutpatients@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

I hope the above information is useful in the interim, and that you hear about your referral soon.

Very best wishes,

Lisa, Patient Experience Public Involvement Team.

Update posted by gibson621 (the patient)

Hi thanks for the information.

After being told to wait a year for healing I have been to my own doctors I am in the process of trying different tablets for nerve damage with further visits in January but I am doubtful this will help what I am going through with walking on my foot as the pain that shoots up my leg is excruciating if I step on uneven ground. I have to walk down the stairs on my heal and can’t walk about the house in my bare feet for more than 5mins without pain in my toes so to me this says something far worse is wrong.

I am worried about corrective surgery and feeling depressed most days, being outdoors hillwalking was a big part of my life and because I had a bunion I was in discomfort I was hoping that it would make me more comfortable on my walks, instead it’s ruined my life.

Dear gibson621,

I'm very sorry to learn that the surgery has not had the positive effect that you hoped for, and the impact this is having on your health and wellbeing. I would still encourage you to contact the outpatients team to enquire about the status of your referral. In addition to the suggested actions above, if you feel that you wish to make a complaint you can reach out to our complaints team who can guide you through the process on: complaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Very best wishes,

Lisa, Patient Experience Public Involvement Team.
