"High quality of care throughout"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / General Surgery Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Patient care services South West Acute Hospital / Emergency Care and Medicine Services

(as a service user),

Fell whilst in town shopping and ended up having surgery. When I fell the first person I can into contact with was a lovely paramedic called Richard. His compassion, care and kindness was overwhelming. Maggie, a lady who works for the ambulance service and off duty stay with me offering care and reassurance throughout. The paramedics who took me to hospital again continued this high standard of care.

My experience within the SWAH continued to be of high standard including emergency department and x-ray department. The paramedics who transferred me to Altnagelvin hospital continued this very positive experience. During my stay in hospital it was exceptional. I seen my surgeon the next morning who explained what was going to happen and within 24 hours of my fall I was recovering from surgery. From the nursing staff, porters, doctors, health care assistants, physiotherapists and catering staff, the high quality of care was maintained. This continues even at outpatients at the fracture clinic. I really don’t think that there is anything that could be improved on.

As organisations we are committed to consistently show kindness, compassion, professionalism and respect to the patients we care for.

Reflecting on the area where you fell, was there anything within the area that increased your risk of falling? Are there any changes that you would recommend for the area at this time to reduce risk of falls for other people?

If you require further information on reducing risk of falls, together with services available to reduce your risk of further falls please contact the Falls Integrated Pathway on 02871610763, alternatively you can find additional information on the Trust website at Later Years | Western Health & Social Care Trust.
