"Warm, friendly and very professional"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / General surgery Grantham & District Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

A day case for urology surgery at Grantham Hospital. The day started at 5am to prepare for a trip to Grantham hospital for a 07:30 check in. We arrived in good time, they let my wife stay until the anaesthesist and surgeon had been. I had been told I was 3rd on the list for 81 minutes in theatre. After my wife had left for work, I was then told 2nd, which I was pleased about, then the whole schedule got revised, which they had told us it could change, now I am 6th.

I rang my wife and asked her to come back after 2 pm when visiting was allowed. Luckily my wife arrived back just before 3 pm, and I soon went to theatre not long after that. I was down in theatre for the scheduled time, and was taken back to surgery ward 1, I was originally on ward 2, but this ward closes after 6 pm.

It was now a waiting game , I had to eat , drink and pass water before going home. The latter was the more difficult part, but after many ways the nurses came up with to try, I was finally on my way home with my wife around 09:30, and home around 11:15.

Had to stop at Mc D's on the way home as we were both hungry, and also my throat was sore. I have found a new remedy for soreness of the throat after surgery... banana milkshake, it did the trick.

All the staff were so warm, friendly and very professional,  but also compassionate,  which we all need when we are in the hospital environment.  A very long day, but well taken care of.

Only downside, I had prepared to be warm in hospital,  but it wasn't, but they gave me extra blankets, so I was OK.

Hi Rodney563

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and with Care Opinion – I will share with the whole team and it really boosts their morale to see that patients have taken the time to send their comments in. We have to check that everything is ok and working after your operation where you had anaesthesia or sedation which is why we needed you to eat, drink and pass urine before we were able to let you go home. Eating and drinking well after an operation is vital in recovery. Glad to read that the banana milkshake worked well for your sore throat!

Sorry you felt it was a it chilly and good to note that the staff gave you a blanket.

I hope you are recovering well – please take care.

KR

Julie
