"Lack of parking"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Radiology

(as a relative),

I had an appointment in radiology with my mother. The appointment was great. Staff were kind, courteous. The environment was clean. My issue is the parking around the radiology area outside which has nothing to do with the radiology staff.

For disabled people parking is non existent which must be in breach of rights for disability access. The side entrance doors don't open sometimes which is frustrating to say the least and I cant access radiology through ED.

NICOR vans and these  metal cabins things which are a complete eyesore are parked along the other side of the side entrance and I am sure there is a health and safety issue there as they are parked beside generator rooms.

My suggestion is to remove some of the grass and few trees as the ground has been ripped up already by the external company mentioned above to have a few disabled parking spaces dedicated to patients accessing radiology or move the NICOR area which they have taken over beside ED.

It seems to have been a temporary entrance for a few years now so I suggest that this is looked at immediately and dealt with properly with proper access and parking facilities.

Hi yankeeks44

Thank you for taking the time to post such positive comments about your time spent in our Radiology Department.

The side entrance for Radiology was set up as a temporary measure for access during COVID times, the plan is to close this entrance with patients/relatives now accessing Radiology for their appointments through the outpatient department as previously. At this entrance there is disabled parking bays and access to wheelchair facilities if required.

Our Site Management team continue to monitor & review access & parking facilities on the busy hospital site.

I wish you and your mother well for the future

Regards

Joanne McFeely

Hi Yankeeks44

My name is Joanne Daly Support Services Manager responsible for Site Management in Altnagelvin.

I’m sorry that this was your experience of parking. As advised by Joanne Mc Feely the side door at Radiology was a temporary entrance during the Covid pandemic. Radiology patients can now access via OPD.

Can I confirm that the site has 135 disabled spaces located throughout the site which is in line with 6% requirement of disabled spaces. The Trust has recently introduced a 3 hours restriction on the disabled bays at the main entrances to help improve the turnover of the spaces and availability of spaces for service user. There are also drop off zones that are found at all the Hospital entrances.

The compounds used by Contractors ensure that on the Acute Hospital site that requires ongoing essential maintenance and upgrades that these works are facilitated and are a necessity to ensure works and upgrades without impacting any of the Trust Parking facilities.
