"The bare minimum seems like a massive ask"

About: Western General Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

Ongoing saga of the care received for the last 3/4 months.

Nurses have a rough job and the carers and cleaners and anyone in the NHS, but, I just don’t feel it justifies the level of care given to the patients that are under their care.

For the last 3 months or so I’ve been visiting my mother-in-law, every day we have been up except a couple of occasions when we have missed a day.

The attitude of the carers has been awful, and again they are busy I get that but it’s horrible seeing someone you love sat there and that’s the environment they are in. The bare minimum seems like a massive ask.

People sat in their beds crying for hours and not asked if they are ok. People sat having urinated and other things all over themselves.

Catheters not changed. Bedding never changed. General hygiene not maintained.

It’s sad but it’s very very poor.

There has been a couple of carers/nurses who have wanted to help but unfortunately the majority have been seriously below the basics I would expect from care givers.

A sad state of affairs. Fear it’s only going to get worse.

Dear Ajbills,

I am really sorry to hear that this has been your experience within medicine here at the WGH. We strive to provide the highest standard of care to our patients and would welcome the opportunity to talk with you about your experience, hear your concerns around the care being provided to your mother in law, and learn from this.

If you would like to reach out to our patient experience team they can support you.

They can be contacted by telephone on 0131 536 3370, or by email at LOTH.feedback@nhs.scot.
