"I felt they were so unprofessional"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Paediatrics wards (19 & 20)

(as a parent/guardian),

My 5 year old was admitted following a seizure. Non verbal and autistic so found it very distressing. I was told I was unable to bring my baby in who is breastfed (even though they have posters everywhere saying breastfeeding friendly!) I voiced concerns over his safety if I had to go home to feed my baby as my child ran out of the room screaming and a staff member who was there didn’t even look my childs direction.

I was told there is always a staff member around as my child has a habit of escaping/wandering off. I was reassured they would be watched. Anytime I looked out the room there was nobody there, meaning my child could disappear and nobody would see.

A group of staff were standing gossiping and when I decided to discharge my child we overheard them slating us.

After being with an amazing ambulance crew, and then with fantastic A&E staff, they completely destroyed my trust in their service.

I hope and pray we’re never in the position again to have to be in that ward. I felt they were so unprofessional staff members.

Dear AngryMum1,

I was really sorry to read that your child had to be admitted to our Paediatric Ward here at UHW.

I am extremely disappointed to read of the experience that you had and would like to discuss this further with you.

What you describe falls well below the standard of care our families should receive. Can you please call me on 07929 792 104 and I can gather further information to allow me to investigate this. In the meantime, I do hope your child is on the mend and look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks

Laura
