"Food offered to patients"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

I currently have an elderly relative in your care and I have to say the food I've seen offered is absolutely awful. Often not even a cup of tea is offered. When people are in your care - they need highly nutritious and tasty food to help with their recovery and I feel this is NOT being provided. More nutritious food would help aid recovery!

What is the deal with beans with every meal recently? Food is swamped in them!

Of course you can site budgets at me - but honestly, I am sick of this being blamed. Where does the  money go? How much per head are you budgeting? I know that if the option was there of paying towards the meals , most would be happy to contribute for a better offering. This would even benefit the visitors as they then will not need to carry in constant supplies to their family members, during the day - which can disrupt the nursing staff as they arrive outside of visiting hours as people are hungry! I have been taking in flasks of hot water and tea bags and a cup to my relative. Honestly, a good cup of tea is so comforting.

I would even suggest whoever is in charge here in Altnagelvin- should go undercover for a few days and see it from a patient perspective. Lay in that bed and eat the food that is given and see how you feel after experiencing it.

I understand that your current catering staff are just following orders and really trying their best but I just don't think it's good enough. I’m sure the waste volumes must be eye watering. Having good simple food would surely lead to less waste and quicker recovery for some people?

Hi Karin 76

apologies for delayed response my name is Joanne and I am the Support Services Manager who has responsibility for the Catering Services within Altnagelvin Hospital. I would like to thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I was so sorry to hear you felt the food was awful and not nutritious and to hear that your relative has had a negative experience. Within the Western Trust our menus have been developed in partnership with our Dieticians onsite to ensure all meals meet the dietary and nutritional requirements to enable patients to recover whilst in an acute hospital setting.

We are in the process of changing menus and suppliers, this had an impact on some the choices on offer during this transitional period and that may be why you have experience the issue with beans. The Catering Team are currently reviewing and working alongside the dietetics team as the new menus are being rolled out. Your relative should still be offered a choice. It may be helpful if you request to discuss with one of the nursing auxiliaries that there are no beans or preferences of you relative as they take patient food orders one day in advance. Once this transition has fully rolled out a patient survey will be carried out to gather more patient feedback and we will appraise any changes' and focus on the areas that require improvement.

Can I also advised that patients are served tea approximately 5 times per day by both Catering and Nursing Staff. It would be most helpful if we could ascertain which ward your relative was in so the team can investigate further please contact: Michelle.Oconnor@westerntrust.hscni.net Altnagelvin Catering Co-Ordinator.

Thank You

Joanne Daly
