"Listening and reading notes"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General surgery Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Orthopaedic Ward B23

(as a service user),

My consultant, theatre staff, ward staff and physiotherapist were fantastic there is absolutely no complaint what so ever.  I found the only person who did not listen to me was the anaesthetist.

This is my second knee replacement and had a problem with the spinal injection the first time around taking several attempts to insert the needle, I advised this to the anaesthetist at the second replacement only for them to attempt again the insert the needle, 4-5 attempts before eventually going for a general anaesthetic, the result I am left with a very painful back again which will be like last time take several months to heal.

The anaesthetist just would not listen to me and seemed to think they knew better than me, but my consultant knew about the back problem from my records.

Sometime they just don't listen or read the notes fully.

Dear Megan 1954

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience. I am sorry to hear about some of the issues you faced. It's clear that the care provided by the consultant, theatre staff, ward staff, and physiotherapist was positive, and it's unfortunate that your experience with the anaesthetist was not the same.

It must have been very frustrating for you to have expressed concerns based on your previous experience and to feel that they were not properly acknowledged. Staff should always take a patient's history seriously, especially when it comes to something as important as previous complications.

I hope you’re able to recover quickly from the pain you’re experiencing, and that your feedback helps improve communication in the future for other patients.

I will ensure this is fed back to the appropriate teams.

Best Wishes

Megan Fleming
