"Staff morale low and very limited staffing levels"

About: University Hospital Ayr / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My grandfather recently spent some time in station 10 at Ayr hospital. Although after getting to know the staff they were lovely, staff morale was incredibly low, the lowest I have seen. The ward is heavy with patients waiting on care packages or waiting to go home, many with dementia which is a challenging job itself as well as giving patients medical care. Same staff seen on duty constantly, patients getting one to one but no one else available outside the ward as they were quite clearly run off their feet, which means it’s challenging to deliver a high standard of care.

If this is going to be run as care of the elderly with or without dementia I feel there has to be better staffing levels, a volunteer post wouldn’t go amiss either to keep good stimulation going for these patients and adding a radio at least in each room for some background noise to try lift some morale.

Dear Ashley92

With apologies for the delay, I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience of the care provided within the Station 10, University Hospital Ayr whilst your grandfather was an inpatient.

I am the Lead Nurse for Medicine and I agree that all of the staff on Station 10 are indeed lovely and very hardworking.

I recently worked a shift on Station 10, supporting staff and delivering patient care and I had a lovely morning there. The "staff banter" was flowing between each other and with the patients. Station 10 already has a volunteer on the ward, which is fully appreciated, but we will liaise with the Volunteer Manager to see if we can place more volunteers in this ward to try and provide a more positive experience for the patients who are staying there.

Both myself and the Senior Charge Nurse have spoken with staff, and would like to reassure you that we have no concerns about staff morale on the ward.

Please accept my best wishes and thank you once again for taking the time to acknowledge your care experience.

Hazel Hainey

Lead Nurse, Medical Division
