My son has emergency surgery on Tuesday and was in alot of pain last night. We were kept waiting in the queue for NHS24 advisor for over 40 minutes. Eventually given an appointment for 1.15am at Kings Cross Hospital.
We arrived at 1.10am. There were two patients in the waiting room. A patient arrived after us for a 1.30am appt.
A healthcare assistant took us into a room to do obs as round 1.30am. I asked if the doctors were running late, she said they were and she was really surprised.
All other patients (including the one who was scheduled after us) were seen by a doctor and left the hospital.
We were still waiting. My son was extremely uncomfortable and the waiting room was cold.
The reception had 1 receptionist, and a gaggle of 4-5 other staff members all chatting and laughing.
No one came to speak to us or let us know about a delay. By 2am I asked the receptionist how much longer we were expected to wait. She told me that the clinic was running late and they are really busy plus one doctor called in sick.
There were seemingly no patients in or out, so I have no idea what the doctors were so busy doing.
Eventually we were seen by a lovely doctor at 2.15am!
We were barely in the room for 5 minutes and we were on our way home. The consultation room was even colder than the waiting room. None of the rooms had lights on so clearly staff weren't up to much.
Appalling service, in my opinion.
Kings cross phoned with the appt at 12am. So if they knew then that they were running late, i think they should have made my son's appt later. Or at least spoken to patients in the waiting room instead of ignoring us. Very poor service.
(The doctor was lovely. Didn't catch her name but think she was Nigerian).
"Ridiculous waiting time in out of hours"
