About: Trauma & Orthopaedics / Ward 4B

(as the patient),

I’m currently a patient on ward 4B in Royal Victoria Hospital and was in a six bed bay with five elderly patients. Three of them sadly had advanced dementia. They were very very challenging for the staff to deal with. One was extremely abusively almost constantly. The nurses and doctors were a credit to their professions. They were always polite and never ignored the patients no matter how many times they faced the same requests or insults. 

I’m a doctor myself and am only too well aware of the enormous pressures our staff face. I was so impressed by their kindness and restraint in such difficult circumstances. I was very proud of them.

Hi My name is Marefin I am the Ward Sister in RVH Ward 4B.First and foremost, we sincerely appreciate the time you have taken to share your experience in our ward.. It is quite motivating to learn that despite the difficult circumstances we currently faced daily on the hospital floor, the professionalism and dedication of our nursing staff and doctors have not gone unnoticed.We strongly believe that empathy and patience are as vital in treating patients as clinical expertise. Therefore, it is heartening to know that our staff reflected these values in dealing with elderly patients, particularly those suffering from dementia. We understand that such patients can pose unique challenges, and it is therefore all the more commendable that our staff dealt with the situation with dignity, and exceptional patience.

Your words serve as a powerful testament to the dedication, hard work, and the professionalism of our staff. They indeed play a crucial role in upholding our hospital's core values and fulfilling our commitment towards providing quality patient care.
