"Respite through motability scheme"

About: Adult Disability Services / Disability Social Work

(as a carer),

My daughter who has autism has challenging behaviour caused by microdeletion. Did not get respite my family and I needed to cope with looking after her at home. However now my daughter is looked after in her own rented house with 2 carers at all times. She can get out in the car by myself or carers because the motability car has perspex. Before we got this car my daughter knew if she hit in the car, home or respite, she got home to me as she hates noise and meant the rest of the family could not get out so we were deprived of liberty . What I would like to see is this not happening to other families like me .The longer you get into a bad habit the harder it is to break. So if this happens to anyone else I would love them to know about the grant you can get from motability.

Thanks for this information, it is great to get information that we will know benefits our families, I will pass this information on to the team leaders in the disability services. I hope your daughter is managing well in her new accommodation and hopefully you and your family are getting some respite. If there is additional queries you have about respite/ supports, please contact your Social Worker, who will be able to support you, your daughter and your family. Thanks again for your response.

I think it would also help the children and adult learning disability team. Also wish to point out my daughter had to get home from school also as well as respite. School and day centre is respite I did not get because we were not told about what can be put in place from notability. To stop bad habits you stop them as quickly as possible. Also if I had got the respite I deserved I could have minded her with one as she trusts me more. Carers take 2 and they are changing all the time.
