I am sorry to hear you were unhappy after visiting St Pancras Hospital and that you felt that patients were left in wheelchairs and there was inadequate seating provided to assure patient comfort. The care we provide on Oakwood Ward is specific rehabilitation following neurological events. All patients receive an assessment of their seating needs within 24 hours of admission by an Occupational Therapist; this includes the provision of specialist equipment to support patients in maintaining comfort and pressure relief. Mobility, independence and rehabilitation can often be supported by the use of a wheel chair. In addition we have access to a variety of chairs and seating depending on individual requirements. We do use generic wheelchairs for short term transport needs, but do not use these chairs as seating. When patients report pain or discomfort or are assessed as not being comfortable they are assessed by a trained nurse and a doctor. Neuro Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists assess and treat patients daily and ensure seating is suitable. The focus and philosophy of Oakwood ward is that every activity is approached in a therapeutic manner whether it be washing and dressing, eating and drinking, or social activity. Patients are encouraged to socialise in the day area where therapists and nurses are in attendance. We take concerns raised very seriously and actively review our procedures when issues are raised. In this case the Ward Manager has personally reviewed the seating arrangements for every patient and been reassured individual seating is in place.
