"Staff attitude"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Accident & Emergency University Hospital Ayr / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU)

(as a service user),

I recently visited ED as I was unwell. It was very busy but all the staff were lovely and they tried their very best with the limited resources they had. I had a long wait but hey ho, so did others.

At 9am I was moved round to the Rapid Assessment Unit. Now I had been in ED since 7pm last night.

I only had to wait 5 mins and I had to walk quite a wee distance to see the consultant. Now bear in mind I am in there with breathlessness. Anyway I plough on. Trying not to be a menace.

My husband and I met the consultant. Very helpful. Prescribed medicine. Said I should take first dose in hospital and wait one hour. And they would ask nurse for wheelchair back to ward.

So nurse appeared making it clear that a wheelchair was not available and a porter would have to be called. Obviously putting everyone out. So I agreed to walk back. A shorter route, they said.

So this was now around 9:20ish. So we waited patiently until around 10. My husband approached the reception. The nurse seemingly pretended not to see him. The upshot was they had no idea why we were waiting, they would investigate and contact consultant.

So we waited another 20 mins. No response. I approached the nurse. They said they had managed to contact the consultant and they had not completed the discharge letter. I tried to speak to the nurse about what the consultant had said about me taking the first pill in the ward. But they just spoke out through me. So I gave up and sat down.

So again we waited again until around 10:20 and the nurse said it was being printed..

Now my question is- why did it take so long?

Why was it not sent until  10:39?

There was no one else at the desk.

They were not on the phone.

When my husband spoke to them the first time he did say we had been at the hospital since 7pm the night before with no sleep. But obviously that really didn’t matter.

When we left they were totally rude. Never lifted their head to say cheerio. Terrible attitude. No empathy whatsoever.
