"I felt belittled and like I was doing something wrong"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care)

(as a service user),

We took our child to Aberdeen A+E with a rash on their groin and bottom.

We had seen a gp earlier in the week and a swab was taken and cream given (this was after several visits to pharmacist) no results from swab back. No improvement and was getting progressively worse and child was unable to sleep due to being in severe pain (even after meds) tried calling nhs 24 but were unable to even get through due to high volume of calls.

Took child up to A+E we were there for a short while, while there we saw 3 members of staff. The last staff member was happy to send us home as they don't treat nappy rash with creams or anything for skin, said it's fredrick street we needed to go to.

I explained we had tried nhs 24 and my child is suffering, they went on to tell us nhs 24 would call us so we could get a gp appointment.

I am a nurse myself and I knew my baby did not just have nappy rash, I challenged them and was reassured nhs 24 would call, which they never did.

Not once did a a higher member of staff in A+E look in on my child. I Took my child to our own gp, Child is now on oral antibiotics and a steroid cream for a bacterial infection. Even our gp was shocked at our treatment.

I felt belittled and like I was doing something wrong taking my child there, my mum instincts were right, there is an infection and it needed proper treatment!!!

Very disappointing.

Dear Bp32

I am very sorry that this was your experience in RACH A&E and its unacceptable for anyone to feel belittled when accessing our services. Parents know their child best and all our staff should know that and treat everyone with respect. I will raise this issue with Hazel the senior charge nurse for the area as it sounds as if a reminder is needed to staff about supporting families and providing care to all with kindness and compassion.

Please accept my sincere apologies for your experience and I am glad that your child finally received the treatment they needed,
