"She was treated with care, respect and dignity"

About: Kilbryde Hospice

(as a relative),

Mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour on the eve of her 85th birthday in December 2023. She was already suffering from dementia and my sister and I chose not to put her through the trauma of treatment.

We took her home on the 22nd of December and nursed her for 2 months until we were persuaded by community nursing staff that we could no longer manage her care.

We got.a phone call the very next day to say there was a place in the hospice and that an ambulance would arrive in an hour or so. We cried with relief but were also filled with trepidation. From the moment we stepped into the hospice the trepidation left us. My sister and I were granted the pleasure of knowing mum was in the best place for her and for us.

The care she was given from every single person working at the hospice was nothing short of amazing. She was treated with care, respect and dignity, my sister and I could go home at night and sleep.

Mums health deteriorated over the next three weeks and in mid March were called into the hospice at breakfast time. My sister and I stayed with her until she passed on two days later.

The care the staff gave to mum was extended to my sister and I, and we will always will be eternally grateful that mum ended her days here.

The emotional support given by the nursing staff to us was incredible, they laughed with us, allowed us to cry with them and allayed any fears which we had. In a time of devastation we were given peace. The care was not over when mum died.

A few days later speaking to the staff at the undertakers who also praised the hospice staff. When they went to pick mum up they said it was so lovely how they said goodbye to mum, putting a flower in beside her for her journey to the undertakers.

I hope I never have to go through anything like this again but would not have any hesitation of  going to Kilbryde Hospice.

Dear Lesleyb609,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such beautiful words regarding your mum's care here at Kilbryde Hospice. As one of the Deputy Managers of the Inpatient Unit, it really is lovely to read that your mum received amazing care from all staff involved. I am so pleased to read that yourself and your sister received emotional support that managed to allay any fears you both had and this managed to give you peace at this devastating time in your lives.

You also mentioned, you will always be eternally grateful that your mum died here at Kilbryde Hospice. Lesleyb609, it was our pleasure to look after your mum in the last few weeks of her life. As a team, we always strive to give individualised, patient centred care and sincerely appreciate you taking the time to let us know that your mum was treated with care, respect and dignity.

I will take the time to feedback your very positive words to all the team of both staff and volunteers.
