"Care during my 2nd pregnancy and labour"

About: Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) / Maternity Assessment/Triage The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Community Midwifery The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Ultrasound Scan (Maternity)

(as a service user),

During my second pregnancy (February - October 2024) the community midwife team and the home birth team were very attentive and helpful. I had intended to have a home birth but at the last minute decided to go into the midwife only unit at the princess royal maternity hospital, as being at the hospital would make my partner feel more comfortable.

The midwife team at the hospital were all lovely especially my midwife.

My experience turned traumatic when my placenta ruptured and my baby suffered a massive bradycardia which resulted in me being taken immediately to theatre for an emergency section under general anaesthetic.

Whilst in theatre I was spoken to abruptly and dismissively by a member of theatre staff. This staff member spoke very condescendingly to me and repeatedly told me to stop screaming, it won”t do any good. The expression on his face it felt to me indicated that he was bored and irritated by my excruciating pain and upset caused by the turn my labour had taken. This was really hurtful and is something I am still dwelling on almost 3 weeks later.

I would like this staff member to be made aware of the impact his manner and tone has had on me. This will hopefully give them the opportunity to reflect on their behaviour and amend it so that he does not speak to another woman in labour the same way.

Dear empathyqx46,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby. I hope you are doing well.

It sounds as though you have had a very frightening experience and although it is great to hear you felt supported by the midwifery team throughout, clearly there was an issue in the theatre. I would be happy to investigate this further if you would be willing to contact me, details below.

Kind Regards,

Tracy Orr

Dear empathyqx46

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback about the community midwifery and homebirth team. I will share this with both teams who I am sure will be delighted to read that they care your received from them was both attentive and helpful.

I see that events changed for you and it must have been frightening, my colleague Tracy has contacted you about this.

May I wish you and your family well for the future

Best wishes
