Following an X-ray of my knee and discussions with my GP, I saw my practice physiotherapist and discussed my x-ray results further.
I described the start of the problem 6 weeks ago and the triggers that cause pain.
(i) Slightly bending the knee with weight on it.
(ii) Cannot deal with stairs, up or down.
(iii) Pain walking uphill and downhill but not on the flat.
(iv) Cracking of the knee when transitioning from sitting to walking.
The physiotherapist examined my knee and subjected it to various movements and exercises. She said the area where the kneecap slides over the tendons when bending the knee is called the trochlear groove and the kneecap moves up and down within it as the knee bends and straightens.
She believes the pain is coming from possible inflammation behind the kneecap where it slides over tendons.
She said it will take longer than 6 weeks to heal and suggested she email me a series of exercises to try at home.
The physio listened to my symptoms, thoroughly examined my knee, put it through various movements and diagnosed the problem. The physio was very efficient and put me at ease, she emailed me as promised with an exercise regimen and told me to return if worried.
