"Ward 68 Princess Royal Maternity Glasgow"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73)

(as a service user),

I attended the postnatal ward 68 at PRM Glasgow following the birth of my son in mid November 2024, where myself and my son experienced Grade A care from the midwives. Every single member of staff on the ward from the cleaners, to the midwife in charge of the ward were friendly, informative and helpful.

I had my daughter 18 months ago, and I received much more support following this pregnancy - a physio came to see me, all newborn checks were completed in a timely manner, I was provided with a contraceptive implant and the anaesthetist did a check up following my epidural. None of these things happened 18 months ago when I had my daughter.

The staff on the ward however, have a thankless job. The temperature on the ward is preposterously hot, despite the staff requesting that it was turned down on over 10 occasions this was never completed by maintenance. On a ward of newborns and new mums to leave them and the staff so uncomfortable feels very unfair.

In mid November at dinner time, there was 14 women on the ward, and catering provided 4 dinners. The staff on the ward used their own initiative to arrange access to the kitchens to provide sandwiches as the catering staff had already left, but this is a drain of their resources and is quite frankly unacceptable to leave 10 new mothers without a hot dinner. This is not the fault of the staff on the ward and we were lucky that they did their best to get people fed anything. They also do not have the resources or support to control the amount of visitors attending. At one stage the bay opposite me had 10 visitors in, including a child who was running through all the bays talking to all the women. Whilst the child running backwards and forwards essentially didn't bother me, other first time mum's will probably find this experience uncomfortable and the staff need more support to deal with issues like this.

The situation with the lifts within the whole of PRM is absolutely ridiculous two. There are 2 lifts for public use. When I first attended in labour I had to walk up 3 flights of stairs with leaking waters as one lift was totally out of service and the other lift was taking so long as it has to travel 6 floors carrying women in labour. This is totally unsustainable and I am pretty sure will lead to women giving birth inside the lifts! This is something that needs urgently looked at, it is a maternity hospital.

But a massive thank you to the team on ward 68, we are very grateful to you all for your care for myself and my son.

Dear cp1995,

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your new son. I hope you are all doing well and your daughter is enjoying being a big sister! It is great to read your feedback on Ward 68 and I will share with the team. I am sorry to read about the issues with the food, visitors and the lifts. I would be happy to discuss further if you want and I can be contacted on the details below.

Best Wishes,
