"Lack of human care"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Initial Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

We had been referred by GP for bloods due to ongoing sickness and dehydration

We were in the department for 8 hours - we were advised it was busy which I completely understand.

What I don’t get is the lack of any care or attention to the people waiting. Surely if you are on hospital grounds, have checked in you are under their care. There appeared to be no care or compassion for the patients waiting. Some staff came out to fill their water bottles etc without any eye contact to the waiting patients.

Everyone is aware that hospitals etc are busy, but that doesn’t excuse the lack of human care - it is very disappointing to see that as a service user in a vulnerable situation where you are reliant on the care, the staff appear indifferent to patients and the feeling is that you are a nuisance.

Dear MMM65

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at our department. We deeply regret the distress and frustration you encountered during your visit.

Firstly, we sincerely apologise for the extended wait time of 8 hours. We understand that being in the department for such a long period, especially when feeling unwell, is far from ideal. It is our priority to ensure that every patient feels cared for and respected, regardless of how busy we are. We are truly sorry that this was not reflected during your visit.

We will ensure that staff are reminded to acknowledge and communicate with patients, even during busy times, to provide reassurance and support.

Kind Regards

Nicole
