"Paediatric Audiology"

About: Lauriston Building / Paediatric Audiology

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had a paediatric audiology appointment in Lauriston.

I think the children’s outpatients is extremely outdated. There were no toys for children there, no receptionist and it wasn’t well signposted. It felt more like going into an office building than an outpatients department.

The actual test was okay - the audiologists were nice however the actual test feels more like teasing the kids than testing them. Showing them toys they were not allowed to hold or touch to distract them to see if they react to noises playing just also seems a bit outdated and more like teasing them.

Dear snowsc63

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your son’s audiology appointment.

Your comments are very helpful regarding the outdated environment and audiology tests. I have passed your feedback on to the Head of Service to review, and I am hopeful we will be able to provide a further response to the points you have made.

Thank you

Dear snowsc63

The Head of Service in Paediatric Audiology, Verity Hill, has now had the chance to review your comments and provided the following response:

"Thank you for your feedback after your visit to audiology at Lauriston Buildings.

I am sorry your experience did not meet your expectations.

We are currently working with the audiology admin team to ensure that additional information about what happens at the appointment, where to find us and what to do when you arrive at the audiology clinic and the audiologists are busy seeing a patient is included with the appointment letter.

We are aware that the signage can be confusing and we will speak to the outpatient manager to look at improving signage and making the waiting room more welcoming.

With respect to the test, please be assured that the test used is an up to date, evidence based clinical test that is regularly reviewed by the British Society of Audiology. This reliable method of testing is used in audiology clinics throughout the UK. We undertake staff competency periodically to ensure good clinical compliance.

NHS Lothian strive to improve and take your comments on board to improve patient experience for all moving forwards."

Thank you again for your feedback.

Louise
