I have had good experiences of the health care system and also bad experiences. I have found recently after given birth to my last son, the attitudes of staff that I've had experience with both in the maternity and in the children's Craig Ward leave much to be desired. Don't get me wrong not all staff have been stuck in their ways and opinions but majority of them have been and have not taken my concerns on board both as a mother to be and also a mother of six children.
I understand that the staff are overworked and underpaid but that is honestly no excuse to make a parent feel that their opinion in both theirs and their child's care doesn't matter and make them feel unvalued and backed into a corner to go along with the plan the health care staff want. I can honestly say that the consultants especially along with some of the younger staff really made me feel uncomfortable with sharing how I felt in regards to the care of my son and made me feel that I couldn't trust not only my gut feeling as a mother but also the NHS.
I also think that the student staff are invaluable to the NHS as the students I had experience of dealing with while in the Craig Ward with my son really took their time with my son and listened and raised my concerns. They are a real asset to the hospital and I can not speak highly enough of them as in some cases they were easier and more approachable than the employed staff and treated me not only with respect and dignity but also made me feel comfortable and at ease.
"lost trust"
