"lost trust"

About: Maternity / Labour Ward / Delivery Suite The Ulster Hospital / Paediatric Day Patient Ward

(as a service user),

I have had good experiences of the health care system and also bad experiences. I have found recently after given birth to my last son, the attitudes of staff that I've had experience with both in the maternity and in the children's Craig Ward leave much to be desired. Don't get me wrong not all staff have been stuck in their ways and opinions but majority of them have been and have not taken my concerns on board both as a mother to be and also a mother of six children.

I understand that the staff are overworked and underpaid but that is honestly no excuse to make a parent feel that their opinion in both theirs and their child's care doesn't matter and make them feel unvalued and backed into a corner to go along with the plan the health care staff want. I can honestly say that the consultants especially along with some of the younger staff really made me feel uncomfortable with sharing how I felt in regards to the care of my son and made me feel that I couldn't trust not only my gut feeling as a mother but also the NHS.

I also think that the student staff are invaluable to the NHS as the students I had experience of dealing with while in the Craig Ward with my son really took their time with my son and listened and raised my concerns. They are a real asset to the hospital and I can not speak highly enough of them as in some cases they were easier and more approachable than the employed staff and treated me not only with respect and dignity but also made me feel comfortable and at ease.

Dear Juniper24

My name is Conor Campbell. My position is Senior Manager, Assurance and Improvement with a leading role in improving the service user experience - which includes responding to any person who tells their story through Care Opinion in order to help the organisation learn and improve.

Thank you for sharing the story of your experience whilst in the care of Maternity Service and Craig Ward.

I hope that you and your baby son are keeping well.

I apologise for each element of this journey that may have been better and would like to hear more about your experience so that your experience may be fully understood in order that learning and improvement takes place in relation to these elements.

Should you wish to do so, rather than make a service level response to you, I invite you to call me on 07485593364 to discuss your recent treatment / care journey at a personal level. Upon having spoken to you, I would then present content relating to your experience to Maternity Service / Craig Ward leadership representatives for their review and consideration as to changes that may be made to positively impact service quality and to elevate and influence staff understanding of the service user experience. Alternatively, you may prefer to email me at conor.campbell@setrust.hscni.net to provide your name / date of birth / address / Health and Care Number (if handy) / contact information and I can then contact you to discuss.

Again, I apologise to you for each element that may have been better and assure you that service leadership is committed to exploring your experience and taking effective responsive action.

Thank you very much

Best wishes

Conor 07485593364
