I had waited over three years for surgery for a complex hiatus hernia, i was admitted in early July and the surgery was completed. The stay in hospital was ok, 2 nights instead of 1, the HCA's in particular were amazing, however it was very clear that there wasnt enough staff on the ward and equipment and facilities were also limited, I am lactose intolerant and i was on liquid diet after the surgery, yet no food was prepared for me, another patient brought me a plant based yoghurt for me from the onsite shop. I was told that keyhole surgery was easier and recovery was quicker. however i was not prepared for the reality of sever pain, limited movement and long recovery period, three months of agony, no follow up care plan, no physio, I was unable to take a deep breath or cough, i couldn't lie flat, had to sleep sat up, couldn't bend over or sit on low chairs, struggled walking due to abdominal pain. i was given a simple generic diet sheet, liquid for 2-3 weeks, soft diet for 2-3 weeks, now 4 months later i am still unable to digest some foods and still in some discomfort. i had to make two GP visits due to difficulties after the surgery, high level pain killers were prescribed, i had not been given any from hospital on discharge. the lack of preparation and lack after care turned this into one of the worst experiences of my life, i know everyone is different but a better insight into what was going to happen would have enabled me to prepare fully and have the correct care package in place at home ready for discharge, my partner took a few days off but really needed more but couldnt book at such short notice. i am angry and frustrated at the total lack of care and consideration given
"lack of care"
