"Care was exceptional"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency Crosshouse Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Crosshouse Hospital / Stroke Care

(as a service user),

I was recently in for treatment, I had a stroke but knew nothing about it, my wife noticed something was wrong. I was taken in and was identified as a stroke, things moved pretty fast.

I was given a scan and after this I was left on a trolley overnight, I had no issue remaining here, it isn't ideal but I understand the reasons for it.

I was taken to a ward later on the next day, I got a scan done on my neck, after which I continued to be monitored. I was told the next day that I could go home, which was good.

The nursing care I got from A&E and then in my ward was exceptional, as were the porters and cleaning staff. I give all 10 out of 10.

Here is my complaint now, I was told around 10:00 I was going home but from that point on it became a lottery.

I had to wait till around 13:00, to be told a porter would take me down for my medications before going home.

I was taken down and left in a waiting area, no one said anything, I waited half an hour and went and asked how long I would wait for, to be told I would be a while, I said I have a lift organised and it could be 16:00 - 20:00. I said I was leaving and would call back.

I got my meds at 16:00. If I had told this earlier I would have been happy to come back. This takes nothing away from my care, but I think this needs to be looked at.

Dear tubxc89

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share this lovely feedback about the care provided by the Emergency Department and Ward 3E within University Hospital Crosshouse.

I sorry to hear that you have required admission to hospital following a stroke. I can only imagine how scary and anxious this must have been for you. However, it is reassuring to know that you received such prompt, professional and compassionate care from our staff

Our staff really appreciate receiving feedback from their patients, and it will be my pleasure to share your kind comments with the wider Teams in both the ED and the Ward. I know they will be delighted to receive this feedback and to know that you felt so well supported whilst you were with them

Thank you also for highlighting the delays you experienced whilst waiting to be discharged home. Whilst we always aim to provide care that safe, caring and respectful, we do recognise that sometimes there is room for improvement and hearing of this directly from our patients is one of the best ways for us to learn and improve. I have passed your comments to the Discharge Team for them to reflect on how they could improve the experience for other patients in similar circumstances

Please accept my best wishes for your ongoing recovery and thank you once again for taking the time to acknowledge your care experience.

Kind Regards

Pamela
