After a very tough start to life our daughter has been left with global developmental delays and will have life-long struggles to do even the simplest tasks that most people take for granted. As a family we struggled with coming to terms with the reality of our situation and found it difficult at times to even leave the house. With lots of input from various members of our community nursing team and after speaking with Gillian our physiotherapist and Kirsty from speech and language therapy we were invited along to a “theratots” group in Fairhill Lifestyles Centre. Immediately it was obvious that our daughter absolutely loved the group and seeing her doing “normal” baby things was amazing. It was also reassuring to meet other families who have had a similarly tough time but are further along in their journey and are learning to adapt to their similar situations and show us that even though things won’t be how we’d imagined it would be before our daughter was born it doesn’t mean we have to limit ourselves to what we do from now on.
It also greatly helped that while this class was a form of therapy for our daughter it took place outwith a hospital setting. We have had so many upsetting times in hospitals that the community centre setting made it feel like it was just a baby activity class and not another medical appointment.
Kirsty and her team are fantastic and we look forward to hopefully attending the next block of classes.
