I had spinal surgery at the above hospital and my stay had its ups and downs, I was on ward 66 room 4 of the neurology department. The nursing staff and care assistants were always rushed of their feet, but always found the time to make you looked after. The only complaint I had was getting pain relief when you needed it, you could wait up to an hour and by that time the pain is over 10. Some members of staff, the students nurses, the catering staff and the cleaning staff went above and beyond for their patients.
I found some of the consultants to be a bit arrogant and would talk over you, one who didn’t seem to like being questioned about your care, where as another would come and stand next to you, braking away from the others on the ward round. He was always spoke to you, explained things in layman’s terms so you understood what was happening and answered any questions you may have had.
The physiotherapists, I felt was told to rush you up on your feet and moving, even on days you it was too painful either from surgery or just having a bad day. It was if the faster they could get you moving the faster they could discharge you. I know that it aids recovery if they can get you moving as soon as possible, but I’m an individual and I’m I different from everyone and and I don’t want to be pigeonholed just because it works for everyone else. They have to be able to adapt their treatment to the individual and not make them be part of the crowd.
The food on the ward was lovely, especially the salads and the different cakes and crumbles with custard. All they did was feed you with tea and toast as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was 3 courses at lunch and 2 at dinner. The only dish I didn’t like was the Cajun chicken pasta, there wasn’t much chicken about 3 bits, the pasta was way over cooked and it was spicy with no flavour, other than that everything else was very taste and enjoyable.
My over all stay on ward 66 was pleasant and they didn’t try to rush you out the door, I was given time to heal and deal with any problems that arose. I would love to go back to ward 66 if I had anymore spinal surgery.
