"My husband's care at end of life"

About: Bromley Healthcare / District nursing King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill) / General medicine St Christophers Hospice

(as a service user),

My husband, suffered from renal failure. He was cared for by the renal team at King's College Hospital for two years and received both peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis. The treatment provided by King's gave my husband another two years of mostly good quality life but sadly the haemodialysis was becoming less effective and he was referred to St Christopher's Hospice.

St Christopher's provided excellent care for him, much of it, including pain relief and sedation, administered by Bromley District Nurses. We received a truly excellent service and words cannot express the gratitude I feel to Shakira and Yemi, the two nurses who cared for my husband. They were compassionate, thoughtful and highly competent and they are one of the main reasons I can look back on my husband's death as being a positive experience in many ways.

My husband was enabled to die peacefully at home with his family because of the services provided by Bromley District Nurses - let's face it, death is an important part of life whether we like it or not and we all ultimately want it to be peaceful and achieved in a loving environment.

Incidentally, Shakira as well as being an ace nurse is a damn good bed engineer too.

Dear SallyO,

Firstly, my sincere condolences to you and your family for the loss of your husband.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide feedback of your husband's experience of the District Nursing Service.

I have shared your lovely feedback with the MDC Network and Mid Bromley District Nursing team.

With best wishes, Sharon
