"Interpreting my results"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

GP referred me to A&E due to suspected heart attack. Had a previous one  3 years ago.

After speaking to a nurse and explaining my situation, they arranged for ECG and bloods.

A HCA called me on and asked why I was at A&E. They then took my bloods and ECG. They looked at the ECG and told me it looks normal.

After speaking to a consultant the ECG didn't look normal to them, so I was admitted as a precaution.

Why is a HCA asking me for my medical reasons for admittance, and then interpreting my ECG results, which was clearly wrong?

I could have went home after this if I took their unqualified medical opinion.

Dear doradorz57,

I am sorry to hear of that you required to attend the Emergency Department at University Hospital Hairmyres, I have no doubt this must have been an awfully worrying time for you.

I am disappointed to hear you you had such a poor experience and were provided with the wrong information. I will be sure to pass this information on to the team who can look into this further and ensure this does not happen again in the future. Should you wish to discuss this further, you can contact patient affairs who will be willing to investigate this for you.

Please phone 01355 585325 or email PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

I hope you are feeling much better and recovering well. Again I am sorry for your experience.

Kind regards,

Alix

Dear doradorz57

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your visit to the Emergency Department. I am sorry if you thought a HCSW was giving you a medical opinion. This would be highly unusual practice and not the process that is well established within the emergency department.

All ECG’s are discussed with medical staff after recording. This is to rule out any obvious immediate life threatening rhythm that requires immediate attention. Obviously I am unaware of your particular position or who this was discussed with. A decision to admit you by a consultant is based on a combination of your history, presenting complaint and other findings.

As Alix suggests in order to look into fully review your case we would ask you to contact patient affairs to provide more detail.

To reassure you if any patient wishes to leave the department after triage and before being assessed by medical staff, this would be against medical advice and this would be fully discussed and documented. We also have a process for following up patients who leave before assessment.

I am sorry if the communication was not clear and effective and hope that after your admission you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Lise
