"Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Urology Victoria Hospital / Urology

(as a service user),

The Urology staff at both NHS Fife's Queen Margaret and Victoria hospitals were very well organised, sympathetic, supportive and helpful right though from initial MRI scan and biopsy at QMH, though the prostatectomy operation  and post op' recovery in ward 54 at the Victoria, then the post operation review and BABS. Although I'm still on the journey, it is reassuring to feel that the follow up will be as organised and sympathetic and that help will be at hand if needed.

Being able to attend the Urology Day Treatment appointments etc. at Queen Margarets Hospital rather than the Victoria made travel arrangements much simpler.

The only suggestion I would make is that when discharging patients from Ward 54 the supply of and training with necessary prescribed items be more consolidated. I realise that on the day of my discharge the ward was full and extremely busy but the supply of pads was left without explanation and nearly ignored. The training for the Fragmin injections was very rushed, and into a region not recommended by the manufacturer, so much so that I had to get it re-explained by the nurse at my GP practice. Also a 4 hour wait in a deserted seating area for some of the prescription drugs to arrive could have been avoided.

My sincere thanks to all the staff involved at both hospitals for their helpful, friendly and effective treatment.

I'd also like to thank the staff at the Kirkcaldy Maggie's Centre for their great support and the information they provide.

Dear TadiFilled

Thank you for sharing your story regarding your prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. My name is Jackie and I oversee the Urology Diagnostic Treatment Centre team.

It is really good to hear all aspects of your journey through all of the Urology departments and how you feel you were well supported, staff were sympathetic, supportive and helpful during which must have been a difficult time.

It is also reassuring to know how we were able to provide most of your care in our Queen Margaret Hospital site and how this helped with travelling arrangements.

I shall pass on your comments to the staff within the Urology Diagnostic Treatment Centre.

I wish you well with the rest of your recovery period and I hope you continue to have a positive experience hence forth.

Regards

Jackie

Dear Tadifilled.

My name is Susan and I am the Senior Charge Nurse in Ward 54.

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. I am sorry to hear of some of the difficulties you experienced on discharge.

This platform allows us to monitor and give assurance on how we are doing as a service and help identify any improvements.

We have been working closely with the community teams and the teams mentioned in your feedback to help develop a smoother complex discharge process for our patients undergoing your type of surgery.

Many of the processes involved in discharging our robotic patients have been the result of receiving patient feedback and feedback on Care Opinion.

We will discuss your recent patient experience at our next review meeting.

Please get in touch if you require any further assistance or information following your surgery.

Thank you and hope you are recovering well

Best wishes
