I reported to Minor Injuries early morning with blisters on the back of my calf which had formed overnight surrounding an insect bite I received three weeks prior.
Unknowingly to me, the infection from the bite had spread down my leg towards my ankle. I didn’t feel ill and up until that morning I felt no pain or discomfort in my calf.
I was triaged within five minutes of arriving and the charge nurse immediately diagnosed quite bad Cellulitis.
I was immediately told that I would need to be given IV Antibiotics for at least four days because the infection was bad.
My blood was taken and tested for Sepsis, the result, negative, was back within 90 minutes.
A cannula was put in and I was given the Antibiotics.
Dr Purdy explained exactly my situation and let me know that I would attend Minor Injuries for the next few days to receive IV Antibiotics and dressings for my wound.
The doctor then de-roofed the blisters and used a Silver dressing on the wound to maximise the healing and keep the wound sterile. Dr Purdy, as a precaution, considered that I might have DVT and booked an Ultrasound for the next day. I was administered a blood thinner injection to my stomach each day for the next three days.
The Deputy Sister, Jane, advised me to report the next morning, for my next session of IV Antibiotics
I did so. Again I was triaged and blood pressure etc taken within five minutes and administered IV Antibiotics. Unfortunately, several more large blisters had developed overnight and these needed treatment and dressings.
I had to report to Minor Injuries for a total of seven days and received IV Antibiotics each morning.
My treatment was absolutely brilliant for those seven days. Each day I would have the Antibiotics, dressings and Blood Tests. Jane and Nurse Nicki were both brilliant doing the dressings.
Doctors and nurses let me know each day on the progress of the wounds and my blood.
At the end of my hospital treatment, I had no infection in the wounds, I was given dressings for the leg and instructions for continuing treatment myself.
I felt very grateful for the service and support I had received over this week. Each staff member were very knowledgeable, attentive and brilliant at their jobs. I had a very positive experience in Minor Injuries from the Receptionist right through to the nurses and doctors. Many thanks for all your kindness.
"The fantastic treatment received at Minor Injuries."
