"Care, attention and recovery from major robotic surgery."

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Clinical Oncology Crosshouse Hospital / Endoscopy Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery Crosshouse Hospital / Xrays & Scans Health & Community Care Services / Community Nursing, District Nursing Service

(as the patient),

In mid-2023 I noticed that I was experiencing lethargy and a changed toilet habit. I consulted with my GP who insisted upon bowel screening. This was undertaken in late July.

A number of tests and procedures followed swiftly including: - Colonoscopy, CT scan, MRI scan, blood tests and an iron infusion. These were undertaken at Crosshouse Hospital.

I had a telephone consultation in August, 2023 with Consultant Colorectal Surgeon Mr Ray who gave a diagnosis of bowel cancer. I was admitted to Crosshouse Hospital and major robotic surgery was undertaken in October, 2023.

Throughout the entire process I was given treatment and attention from highly competent clinicians and nursing staff. All procedures were fully explained to me which gave me confidence and a total lack of anxiety.

My post-operative care in ward 4B was handled perfectly by the team there and particularly by Gillian the enhanced recover nurse who was a constant source of encouragement.

I remained in Ward 4B for one week and was discharged. My care was transferred to Kilwinning District team who attended to my wounds. The stoma nurse team Tracy, Vikki and Paula have given regular care and encouragement throughout and have allowed me to enjoy the confidence to resume most of my daily activities.

The best possible example I can give you of the quality of care at Crosshouse Hospital is as follows:-

Two weeks after discharge the District Nurse called to dress my wound. Following her departure the wound leaked an excessive amount of clear fluid and the District Nurse was called to apply a fresh dressing. Again the wound leaked and we called Gillian at Crosshouse Hospital for advice. Gillian said that she would speak to Mr Ray and revert to us, when she called back she advised that Mr Ray was comfortable with the situation but as I had a pre-arranged appointment with stoma care the following day I should present myself for closer examination. I met with a clinician who arranged for blood tests and prescribed antibiotics after examining the wound. There followed visits two visits at the end of November to resolve this difficulty and a final a visit on the late December to confirm that the wound was healed. Throughout these visits I was again treated with great care which greatly enhanced my recovery.

In summary a then 79 year old man has been given a new lease of life. All members of a dedicated team including phlebotomy, x-ray, nursing, domestic and clerical staff must be praised for their dedication, care and professionalism. A year has been completed but the attention continues with a recent CT scan and there will be subsequent procedures.

Throughout this entire journey at no time did I experience any uncertainty, fear or anxiety.
