I recently attended the National Treatment Centre in Kirkcaldy, Fife for a Total Hip Replacement (right side).
Initially I was apprehensive, however on arrival I was made to feel welcome and I soon felt reassured about the procedure I was about to undertake. My general observations are ;
1. The facilities and resources are second to none.
2. I was involved in my treatment at every step and encouraged by staff to ask questions which were answered thoroughly.
3. When in contact with health professionals involved in my care I felt they took ownership for my patient journey from contact at reception to discharge home. This was demonstrated by each health professional being very thorough.
4. I notice a very strong and positive team culture within the NTC from start to finish of my patient journey. Whilst each team member focussed on their own particular skill base I could see that they looked upon their individual roles as one of responsibility and certainly not status. Both Intra and Inter Communications were excellent.
5. I felt that I was rightly treated as a patient and not a customer. In other words I followed advice for preparation pre-op and post-op rehabilitation in terms of my responsibilities( exercises, diet, logistics, family support etc) and encouraged to do so.
6. Overall I could detect a very good balance between effectiveness and efficiency given both human capital and physical resources available.
"A very good balance between effectiveness and efficiency"
