"A&E trip after kite surf accident"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency North Devon District Hospital / Intensive & Critical Care Unit

(as the patient),

I was a total muppet on a kitesurf at westward ho and managed to knock myself out whilst in the water. The result was I nearly drowned and was rescued by most kind fellow kiters!!

An ambulance was called - and I was taken to A and E and the admitted to ICU.

I appeared to suffer from a form of secondary drowning - where I was initially ok - but then went downhill fast - low temp and low blood stats.

Everyone was amazing - thank you.

Some highlights - the care and concern show to my girlfriend and her daughter. I was 'out of it' and they had to cope with the stress of be being ill. The staff were so kind, patient and professional - explaining all that was going on - with calmness and good humour.

I spent a few days on ICU and got to see the most kind, patient, professional and lovely people working with the most challenging conditions. All the way thru my journey I was struck by the team work and pride - from the consultants, the nurses, the x rays and the people that make the food and clean the wards. A great team doing a fine job. Thank you so much

Dear soilqc53,

Thank you for providing us with your feedback and I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond to you.

I thought when I reviewed your feedback this morning that I must share this with the wider team in ED.

I hope you and your girlfriend and her daughter are all well and thank you again for providing us with your feedback.

Kind regards
Sophie Hutchings

Update posted by soilqc53 (the patient)

Dear Sophie.

How nice to hear from you - I am pleased to say that all are well, and in fact my GF had some wonderful follow up help to deal with the shock and emotion of it all.

I remain so very impressed and touched by the teamwork and pride at every stage of my journey. I get that I was not the usual ED/ICU patient - as basically I was well but had tried to make my self not so thru rather silly muppetry. But all the time I was under your care everyone was so profession (which you kinda expect) but also kind and caring and thoughtful - which you hope for but it is so wonderful when you see it. I really get that the staff have a tough time and see tough things each day. I loved the humour and positivity they all showed. Wishing you and all the team very best wishes.
