"My journey to terminal cancer"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Cardiology University Hospital Ayr / Palliative Care

(as the patient),

In September 2024 my hiatus hernia erupted, and I was rushed to Ayr Hospital, where I was admitted to the Cardiac Care ward, unable to swallow anything.  Although treatment options seemed to be limited, the care I received was first class and couldn't be faulted.

After investigation I was transferred to Station 9 where, again, there was a wonderful team of staff, working with real care and compassion. Although my prognosis was poor, the care provided went some way to making this bearable.

I was discharged to palliative care in October, since when the follow up care has also been first class, largely organised and arranged by the hospital's McMillan Nurse.

I recently attended the ambulatory cardiac ECG unit for a 24-hour monitor to be fitted.  Again, the staff care was first class.  I did not recognise the name of the commissioning doctor, but I would certainly appreciate feedback on the outcome, as I will do anything at all that I can do to extend my time here.

Thanks to everyone.

Dear normaxh55

With apologies for the delay in responding to your lovely feedback, I would like to thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of the care provided by the Cardiology and Palliative Care Teams within University Hospital Ayr.

I sorry to hear that you have had such a difficult time since September and that, following investigations, your prognosis was not what any of would have wished for. This must be a scary and anxious time for you, and I am glad that you have received such compassionate and professional care in Station 9 and that you are now receiving first class care from our Palliative Care Team

Our staff really appreciate receiving feedback from their patients and it will be my pleasure to share your kind comments with the wider Teams who looked after you.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to answer any specific queries as Care Opinion is completely anonymous, however if you would like to leave your contact details on 01292 513942 (voicemail) and I will call you back or via email at aa.patientexperienceteam@aapct.scot.nhs.uk I will pass them to the Cardiology Team to see if they can provide you with feedback on the outcome of the 24-hour monitor you had fitted at the ambulatory cardiac ECG unit (if you don’t have this already)

Please accept my best wishes and thank you once again for taking the time to acknowledge your care experience.

Kind Regards

Pamela
