"Overall, a positive experience"

About: Cardiology / 9 North

(as the patient),

I recently had an implantable loop recorder fitted at Ward 9 North, Belfast City Hospital. This is a day procedure done under local anaesthetic.

A week before, the two medics who would be carrying out the procedure (Karen and Samantha) called me to confirm the appointment and to answer any questions. It was helpful to have this conversation before the day of the procedure.

On the day, the device implant team - Karen, Samantha, and Gareth (Cardiac Physiologist) – were all so professional and friendly which was reassuring. Again, they were happy to answer any questions and really put me at ease.

I was on the day-ward for just over one hour before the procedure and had the opportunity to meet other patients undergoing the same procedure. There was some chat which I think helped us all relax a bit. One patient had just had their loop recorder removed and was reassuring about their own experience.

The procedure itself was short and practically painless.

I was back on the ward for about 45 mins following the procedure and then allowed to leave. In total the duration was approx three hours from 12:00-15:00hrs.

One thing that could’ve been better – it would have been great to be offered a cup of tea or even some water on return to the ward after the procedure. The patient just before me had been provided with a sandwich lunch so maybe it depends on the timing of your procedure.

Overall, a positive experience on Ward 9 North. The medical staff made what is a fairly daunting procedure for the patient as smooth as possible which was much appreciated!

Hi Midgetgem510

My name is Emma Herron and I am the Service Manager for Cardiology in the Belfast Trust. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment about your experience of getting a loop recorder implanted whilst being a day patient in the Belfast City Hospital. I am so glad to hear that your experience was positive. I will absolutely pass these comments on to Karen, Samantha and Gareth. I will also take on board what you say about the offer of a cup of tea. I know, personally, that a little cup of tea is a great comforter at times and there should be no reason (as far as I can see) why it can't be offered to a patient post loop implant procedure. I hope you're keeping well and have recovered from your procedure.

Thanks once again for your positive feedback - it really does mean so much to our colleagues.

Emma
