My teenage daughter slowly began isolating herself since starting high school. She was on the CAMHS waiting list for some time and when she was eventually seen she had just about completely stopped going to school and in fact going anywhere was a challenge.
She got an autism diagnosis and was receiving cognitive behaviour therapy along with seeing a psychologist for anxiety. All these things are great but my daughter was still isolating (more than ever) she stopped staying at her grandparents house, she just wanted to be in her room all the time, she was miserable and just existing in life. It really put a lot of stress on our mother/daughter relationship.
We got referred to an OT (Jackie) who came to the house to see my daughter and get to know her and my daughter was willing to participate in this as it meant she didn't need to leave the house. Jackie asked what our goals were and asked my daughter if she wanted things to change, which she did but she just didn't know how to do it.
Jackie coached her in so many different ways and within 6 months I have a completely different child. She now attends college and placements, she can go out on her own for example to the shops or even out with a long term friend. She uses public transport alone to get her to where she needs to be and most importantly she is thriving in confidence. I honestly didn't believe it was possible after seeing how low things were at times. I can never thank Jackie enough for what she did for our family.
