"Kindness in a scary time"

About: Belfast City Hospital / Oncology

(as a relative),

My mum has recently been diagnosed with a form of ovarian cancer which has completely floored us all as a family.

She has started her chemotherapy journey and I wanted to acknowledge the kindness that has been shown to her so far.

Dr McKenna has been so gentle with my mum, taking time to really listen and support her, without pressure or judgement. Just a warm caring person, whose very presence is like receiving a hug. Thank you to her for her patience and clinical and personal excellence.

We also were impressed by Grace, the student nurse who cared for mum at her last appointment. As mum said, Grace by name and grace by nature. You were so sweet and kind and genuinely warm, it allayed a lot of the fears and nervousness.  You will no doubt be an excellent nurse and I hope if you read this, you will be aware of the difference those little touches make.

Adriana has been our point of contact for queries and again, it's never felt like we were a burden or a nuisance, even when an appointment went to the two hour mark while we discussed all our questions. Your knowledge and experience shows through and it's obvious you care about how people feel, not just their medical plans.

Overall, we have nothing but praise for the system that has been there for mum, and for us as a family as we walk this horrible journey.

Thank you to each one, from receptionists to the domestic staff and all the nursing team who are there to help.

Dear Maisi,

Thank you for taking the time to write your story about your mother and her treatment whilst being looked after by the Oncology Service. I am glad that this has been a positive experience at this difficult time. I will pass on your comments to the staff you have mentioned.

Thanks

Helen

Thank you for coming back to me Helen, it's really appreciated and I know how busy you all are.

I would really be grateful if you could ensure that it is shared with the staff, especially Grace as I know how valuable this will be for her portfolio and learning.

Many thanks again,

Maisi
