From the moment contractions started I had the support from a midwife at the Maternity Assessment Unit. They guided me through my symptoms and when I should leave for the hospital (over 1hr away). On arrival at the DGRI I was assessed quickly and moved through to the birthing suite. My daughter arrived swiftly, during a shift change. The midwives looked after us incredibly well while also exchanging handover notes. The suite was lovely and spacious, exceptionally clean and well prepared.
The only negative from my whole experience was the wait for my prescription to be discharged and head home with my baby. I was given the option of leaving with my baby on the day she was born, or stay the night. I opted to stay the night and in the morning was told I'd be discharged by lunch. My baby and I were checked by all professionals and signed off to go home, however the prescription took a further 5 hours! This was 5 hours of waiting; where I was unnecessarily taking up a bed; and I had to extend childcare for my son. As I had been signed off by midwives and doctor, I hardly saw anyone during this time and felt very overlooked.
