I was very fortunate to be seen at this ADHD clinic after a lifetime of torture.
The initial experience at the clinic was slightly disappointing due to not the most welcoming reception team. You’d expect the representatives to welcome individuals who suffer with such conditions, would understand the importance of patients feeling safe and comfortable.
However, my clinician Shelley on the other hand, turned the disappointment into a huge sigh of relief and hope.
I’ve only met Shelley twice but she just got me like nobody else ever has. She’s highly trained and a very good listener. It was the second time meeting her that really affirmed this for me as she was an extreme help and comfort to me when I unfortunately had a bit of a meltdown to her & my lovely new clinician who will be replacing Shelley. They both honestly was a huge support to me that day and I’ll forever be grateful for their help and reassurance. Most importantly they know that although someone may seem okay physically, that a condition such as ADHD is a very misunderstood and complicated condition. I’ve never felt “normal” and they made me feel that it’s okay to be not normal, our brains work differently. I don’t have a mum and their actions that day made me feel, for the first time, what it feels like to be nurtured and told that I’m okay just the way I am.
I’m now on medication for my ADHD and it’s the best I’ve ever felt my whole life. I’m a new person and my goal is to bring a whole load of awareness to this debilitating condition. But thank you Shelley for believing me with what I was stating and not being fobbed off like all the other doctors I have seen. You listened, you made me feel heard and you treated me. I owe you the world.
Sadly, I’ll not get to work with Shelley again but I just wanted to say that Shelley is remarkable at her job and I really hope with my whole heart that everyone suffering with this condition gets to experience her presence.
Thank you Shelley, I’ll miss you. X
