I had the most awful experience when waiting on getting my waters broken. I was taken down to labour ward at early morning for an arm procedure not to be seen until late that night. As a diabetic patient I needed to go on a sliding scale but due to the ward not having an insulin pump available for me I had to wait on this before being allowed my waters broken.
I waited all day in labour ward with no staff present with me, no checks done on myself or my baby inside me. I got extremely upset to be told this is what happens.
I had filled up all the bed pans I had in the room and had nowhere else to do the toilet, nobody came to change these. My observations were several hours overdue, nobody offered me water or food which meant I then had a hypo. If my partner wasn’t there to keep an eye on me I hate to think what could have happened to me with nobody to check on me.
Once labour got started I was taken care of so well by my midwife and student midwife and I’ll forever be grateful to them for their professionalism, kindness and I’m so glad I had these two lovely ladies to advocate for me.
It’s just such a shame my experience was completely ruined before labour. It’s very clear the maternity services are at breaking point. To be told it’s the nhs is not good enough excuse for patient neglect,
