My partner and I attended the in-person antenatal classes at the New Victoria recently.
During the first session we were not made to feel particularly welcomed, and the midwife leading the course took no time to break the ice, or encourage us to interact with other parents, instead launching straight into the stages of labour with no preamble. Some topics, such as pain, were not approached in a trauma sensitive way and left us feeling uncomfortable and so we made the decision to not attend the second session on pain relief and complications as we felt that we would have left the session feeling more anxious than before going in.
During the third session, the midwife covered everything for after birth care of our baby at a speed which didn't allow us the time to take anything in; both the sessions that we attended were scheduled to run until 1930, but we were finished well before 1900. This means that we quickly realised that there are huge gaps in the information given. We feel that more time was spent signposting us where to find more information than actually giving us new information.
We are planning a home birth and also felt that the information given was not adapted for us, as well as no information given on formula feeding etc.
If we had paid for this, we would be asking for a refund as we have learned so little, and have come away feeling that the classes pitched the whole birth experience in a pretty negative light.
