I was on holiday in the Caribbean and was bitten by mosquitoes and caught Dengue fever.
I had it treated and was fine. My flight was booked to return to London at the beginning of September.
Anyway I also had three days of diarrhoea. Got on the flight got home. A couple of days later I felt really bad took some pain relief, woke up the Monday feet tingling face and right foot. Face was dropped. Went to A&E at Royal free hospital ended up in ITU. Diagnosed with GBS. Spent a month in Hospital.
I came to the Nero Rehabilitation Centre at Edgeware Hospital. I was unable to walk numb from head to feet had facial pausley, I didn’t recognise myself as my face was so twisted on the right.
This syndrome has been difficult to deal with, but I focused all my energy into walking,
My physiotherapist Kate she was absolutely fantastic brilliant and she believed in me along with Syrita they did an awesome job of rehabbing me. Suman was full of life and is excellent at her job always putting your safety first. I could go one forever.
I’m so glad I was sent here, the staff are absolutely amazing, caring and they encourage you but always with your safety in mind.I honestly would not be where I am today without their dedication to help me get back home.Kate Syrita Suman Stella Elizabeth Elvira Claire Michelle Vinnie Alma Preya Ryan and all the other members of staff have been amazing. Nothing is to much, it’s like being at home. I’m really going to miss them all. I would strongly recommend this unit for rehabilitation it’s a wonderful place because they have a awesome team working together. There are a few things in relation to the room mirror to high I’m short so I would expect not to be able to see in the mirror.
However speaking to another patient they agreed the mirror is to high considering they are a wheelchair user. Also not enough sockets and to far down to the ground you could easily fall trying to get to it.
In regards to dinners nothing like hospital food, it’s nice and hot and most of all looks appealing, and taste good. However most of us agreed that dinner was served to early so we would have lunch at 12.30pm and we are being served dinner at five and we were still quite full from lunch. Lucy and Patience who served our meals are the most caring people you can find. They knew their patients well and conversed with us.
Bearing in mind the majority of us are stroke patients it was taking us until 1.30pm to finish our lunch.
The others issue was where things were placed in the bathroom. No mirror over sink. The mirror was closer to the bathroom door. So if you are having difficulty walking it was a risk to try and walk over to it for fear of slipping. Also there are no rails near that wall to hold onto. Lastly there should be a call button in the area as well. It’s a large bathroom so I feel it’s needed.
In regards to Reception, staff attitude can be an issue and as they are the first point of contact for visitors and a few people have also mentioned this to me. On one occasion I had two visitors in my room already, and I wasnt informed another came to visit and was kept at reception for over 35 minutes.
I feel this was unacceptable behaviour and I should have been informed and I could have gone out to the garden with my family and friends.
It’s not what people expect when they are coming here for the first time.
Apart from that wish I could stay forever.
