"Containment not treatment"

I am not the patient, but next of kin to someone who was admitted here due to our local unit being closed. This has to rate as the worst admission that I have ever experienced. When treating someone from out of area who has a long history of admissions one would think it would be common sense to read previous notes and treatment plans to ensure that the patient is receiving treatment that has proven to work. This hasn't happened and sadly this is to the detriment of the patient, just prolonging the accute phase and hindering any hope of recovery. I struggle to see how this equates to being either dignified or respectful - it is containment and not treatment. Treatment should be something that is working towards recovery and wellness, not containing someone and treating them with meds that clearly aren't working. This would be bad enough if they didn't have access to information regarding past history, but when that information is there and they just aren't using it, then it's shameful. It seems to be me that there is a clear lack of leadership, decision making and communication.

Thank you for taking the time to bring this to my attention and I would like to apologise for the poor impression you have received of Haven (PICU) Ward. As a Trust we place great value in treating individuals in our care with respect and dignity, and work towards promoting recovery and wellbeing within our services. I am very sorry that on this occasion you feel this standard was not met. Please contact me, Becky Whyte, Hospital Manager on 01202 492145 or via Becky.whyte@dhuft.nhs.uk, and I will arrange for us to meet with David Porter, Matron PICU. We will discuss your specific concerns, with a view to making the changes necessary to improve this service.
