My son, 4, started frequently urinating the previous few days. Also said he was thirsty. So we dropped a urine sample into doctor which was high in sugars, immediately took him out of school for a blood sugar reading which again was high. GP said to take him immediately to A&E daisy hill. Arrived at 2.30pm and by 4.30pm he was admitted into his own private en-suite room and confirmed to have type 1 diabetes. Me and my wife were just in shock. The hospital staff were fantastic in helping and explaining what why how when etc. and great in dealing with a 4 year old.
We also got an immediate meeting with the diabetic team in newry southern health, they too explained and answered all questions we initially had in lay terms. They will offer a 24 hour phone service which is very reassuring as we embark on this diabetes journey with our son. Many thanks NHS!
