"This is one of the most positive experiences I have had in the NHS"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Audiological medicine Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as the patient),

I was initially diagnosed with Pulsatile Tinnitus as part of medical investigations, which eventually led to a diagnosis of Severe Iron Deficiency Anaemia.

I was initially sent to see an ENT Consultant and a Hearing Therapist at Treliske Hospital in Truro, Cornwall.  By the time I saw this health professional, I had seen several others and had little understanding of what was happening to me, why I was given a diagnosis of Pulsatile Tinnitus and what this would mean to me and was feeling scared and anxious.

The Hearing Therapist I saw was Fiona.  She was amazing; she explained what I had, why I had been given this diagnosis and what I could do to ease the symptoms.  She went through the results of my hearing tests, showing me the results on a screen and explaining them to me. I had a long appointment with her, I did not feel rushed, I was able to talk about everything I was worried about and felt I had Fiona's full attention and she presented as genuinely interested in my experience.

She provided me with copies of very helpful literature (which I did read) and this helped me to better understand my diagnosis.  She was aware I was having other treatments and asked to see me again after the outcome of other tests/procedures.

This second appointment was as positive as the first and with the additional information available since the first appointment, she was able to offer me further helpful advice and asked to see again me after I had been taking prescribed medication for a month to see if it has made a difference to my Pulsatile Tinnitus.

This third appointment is still to go ahead but I have no doubt it will be as helpful as the others.  I can honestly say this is one of the most positive experiences I have had in the NHS.  I felt truly heard by Fiona, whom I believe has gone above and beyond to help me.
