"Lack of respect for basic dignity"

About: Ards Hospital / Breast Screening Unit Belfast City Hospital / Breast Imaging Belfast Health & Social Care Trust / Breast Screening Unit

(as a service user),

I recently attended Newtownards Hospital breast screening unit for a routine mammogram. When I entered the screening room the radiographer asked me to undress in front of them instead of showing me to the changing room and giving me a gown. I had to request a changing room and a gown. This lack of respect for basic dignity may put people off attending for breast screening.

Dear delphinussc73,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your visit to the Breast Screening unit at the Newtownards Hospital.

As a unit we wholeheartedly appreciate the importance of maintaining clients dignity during their imaging appointment especially to encourage reattendance in breast screening.

Due to the nature of a mammogram examination, wearing a gown during the procedure is not possible as this can limit the positioning needed to obtain optimum image quality.

However, this doesn't retract from the importance of maintaining clients dignity.

We will endeavour to remind our team of the importance of this and ensure gowns are available in the moments when positioning is not undertaken.

Yours sincerely,

Breast Imaging Service Manager,

Noelle Clerkin

Good afternoon delphinussc73,

My name is Nial. I am an Experience & Involvement Facilitator within the South Eastern HSC Trust, and part of that role includes responding to any person who tells their story through Care Opinion.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to use Care Opinion to share your experience of the Breast Screening Unit at Ards Hospital.

I would like to highlight that this service is operated and ran by the Belfast Trust, however service leadership from Radiology Services within the South Eastern Trust have read and listened to your story.

They would like to let you know that they have highlighted the learning themes that you have raised around treating patients with dignity and respect, and ensuring that they are provided with the appropriate gown size and changing facilities, and that this will be shared with the South Eastern Trust's Mammography team for their own learning.

I wish you all the best,

Nial
