"I do not feel I was treated respectfully"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Emergency Care and Medicine Services

(as the patient),

I was advised by my GP to attend A&E due to severe pain in my abdomen, which also triggered an acute attack of fibromyalgia and photophobia & hyperacusis, which I have suffered since having a brain haemorrhage.

The A&E staff were excellent. I was given pain relief which took the edge off my symptoms but I was still suffering badly. I was taken for an x-ray and a CT scan which showed no apparent abnormalities. I was then told to leave the hospital immediately.

I was very distressed by this as no explanation was given for my symptoms and no referrals were made. I expressed my concern as I was unable to move very well and was told to sit in A&E waiting room until I felt better. I then proceeded to projectile vomit, no help was given and a friend that was with me grabbed a carrier bag so that I could be sick in there.

The surgical doctor was in attendance at this time and agreed to give me one more dose of medication so that I could get in a car and go home. I was then given prescription medication for the pain; the hospital apparently did not have all of this and I was told to collect the rest from my GP as I would need them for 7 days.

Upon speaking with my GP, I was told they do not prescribe this medication, it can only be obtained from the hospital; so I was left without adequate pain relief. To add to my concern my doctor explained that I should never have been given this medication in the first because it can cause bleeding and I have a history of brain and rectal bleeding.

I felt absolutely devastated by the manner in which I was treated towards the end of my stay. I live alone, which the doctors were told, and I was expected to just look after myself. I was in excruciating pain and I do not feel I was treated respectfully and was completely unsupported. This ordeal was deeply distressing and only further compounded an already extremely difficult situation.

Dear Carew58,

My name is Michelle Scott Patient Client Experience Lead for the Trust. I thank you for taking the time to leave your story. Staff who normally respond to stories in Emergency Care SWAH are not available at this time and we do try to respond to all stories in a timely manner. I therefore have shared your experience with the department including senior nurse lead. We indeed appreciate all feedback and take concerns very seriously. The following is Julie's response which I hope you find helpful.

"Dear Carew58,I am very sorry to hear that your experience was less than satisfactory and that you felt so unsupported and not treated with respect. This is not the care we would want for our patients. I have ensured that your story has been shared among all staff in the department for discussion and learning. It is difficult to investigate exactly what has occurred or what staff were involved due to the anonymity of care opinion however If you would like to discuss your case and these issues further please do not hesitate to contact me Julie Collins Lead Nurse for Unscheduled Care and Medicine via switchboard at SWAH 02866382000"

kind regards

Julie
