"I gave birth in July after having ..."

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

What I liked

I gave birth in July after having a few problems during pregnancy which required me to attend the hospital on a regular basis for a couple of months. Overall the staff on both the ante natal wards and the day unit were great although I got the impression they were incredibly overworked. I would like to especially mention how wonderful the staff were on delivery suite. I could not fault my midwife, she made the whole experience alot easier and really put me at ease after being very anxious on arrival. Thank you so much.

What could be improved

It seemed an absolute trek to get up to delivery suite - especially when in labour!

I found the hospital food appalling - definite need for improvement.

Facilities for warming babies bottles - I have since had to attend hospital on a number of occasions since giving birth and unless I have asked whilst on the wards I have struggled to feed my son as there appears to be a serious lack of facilities (please correct me if Im wrong) The cafe at the front entrance states that they cannot provide hot water for health and safety reasons???? When I asked at the main reception the response I received was "good question - I dont know!"

In response to a comment made by the trust on Feb 18th re: parking - I enquired about the scheme which entitles you to a reduction in payments if you have to attend on a regular basis. The staff at the car parking desk told me no such thing existed and said to park on A&E pay and display instead. I'd appreciate your response to this.

There still needs to be something done about the smoking at the main entrance!!

Response from Royal Blackburn Hospital

Congratulations on the birth of your child. Thank you for the mentioning how wonderful you found the staff on delivery suite and your midwife who relieved your anxiety.

Enquiries have been made into baby feeding facilities and we are surprised to find that there are none, not just at the Royal Blackburn but at other hospitals too. The Catering Manager is going to raise the matter at our next facilities meeting to see if there are reasons or legislations to why we can not offer this service. Thank you for bring this to out attention.

On your next visit to the Hospital pleas make enquiries with the General Office about Parking and they should be able to provide you with further information.

The Trust has enforced a smoking ban outside the main entrance and other areas within the Trust grounds. This has not proven to be very successful therefore to ensure smokers do not stand at the main entrance omitting second hand smoke the Trust are looking at the reintroduction of smoking shelters.
