"It's made me reflect on my own practice and how a patient feels"

About: Borders Community Services / Community Nursing Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Borders General Hospital / General Surgery (Ward 7)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to ward 7 after getting a nasty infection in a heal blister and was an in patient for 4 nights. From my journey through A and E and ward 7 and now still getting treatment from the nurse at my medical practice, Joanne and Cheryl the tissue viability nurse have all been amazing in the care and treatment delivered to help me on my road to recovery.

I myself work within NHS borders and I never thought I would be on the receiving end of treatment. It has made me reflect on my own practice and understand the way a patient feels and responds to treatment when it is delivered in a professional and caring manner. It certainly is a eye opener when the shoe is on the other foot (pardon the pun) on the way you feel when receiving the  care and treatment and how scary a situation can be when you are unsure what is going on and why you are feeling so unwell. Over all departments I was in I felt I was treated with dignity and value was given to my care and treatment.

The challenges each department and staff face day to day yet they still go above and beyond to reassure us and help us in our recovery, they are all so valuable to the team.

Thank you A and E staff for the fast, professional, prompt service and reassurance. Thank you ward 7 for everything you have done to help me in my recovery and the excellent care your team has delivered, from nursing duties to the domestics and the endless cups of coffee and keeping our wards clean. You should all be proud of your team. Thank you to Cheryl the tissue viability nurse and Joanne the practice nurse at Melrose surgery for their continuing care to get me better and back on my feet. Also thanks to my own team for the care and support in helping me in recovery and returning to work. I'm certainly proud to be working for the NHS and will use my experience in reflecting on the care and compassion I show to patients in my care and hope I can make them feel as comfortable on their recovery journey as I felt.  Thank You Thank you Thank You.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and the positive impact that the skill, care and compassion of our staff has made to your recovery. I will pass on your comments to the departments and staff involved and I am sure they will find it a great encouragement in these pressured times. Kindest regards,

Dear Roberts0

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on your experience engaging with our health services. Your feedback makes such a difference to our staff in reaffirming that they deliver the best possible care they can to the people of the Scottish Borders. What is particularly striking is your experience as you have journeyed through in patient care to care in the community and had such a positive experience. I hope your heal blister and infection has improved and you are fully recovered. Your insights as a health worker and then being a patient is so important for you professionally and I hope that your reflections build on your existing practice in delivering person centred care. The Professional Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Council enjoy discussing reflective accounts of experiences of people using our services and if you are willing please get in touch with me direct to discuss sharing your experiences with the council.

Kind Regards

Philip
