"A lack of respect, dignity and patience"

About: Maternity care / Ward 45 ( antenatal)

(as a service user),

I recently gave birth at Altnagelvin. Throughout my antenatal care I was again so grateful to have been under the care of a doctor who always takes time with their patients and is genuinely so caring, a true gem.

During my stay on the antenatal ward for induction I again was expertly cared for by the midwifery team.

I was however examined by one of the  consultants during my time on the ward and I was appalled by their lack of respect for their patients in their examination. This was not my first rodeo, so as women we know some aspects of antenatal care are not that pleasant but are carried out with respect and dignity and patience. The doctor who examined me and three other members of staff on the ward did not possess any of these qualities.

The internal exam was undertaken with such force and speed that it was one of the most painful and disrespectful experiences I have had. I told the consultant that it was very painful and they did not respond or care about my discomfort.

There is no need for forceful examination ever. A woman's body is going through enough, show it some respect!

All of the care I received from all other members of staff was outstanding but this behaviour should not be accepted or condoned.

Hi thankyou for taking the time to give us feedback. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you both on the birth of your baby. I am so sorry to hear of your negative experience and really value your opinion.

As the ward sister I am disappointed to hear how you felt as it would not be our intention to make you feel this way. We always try to respect the ladies as understand coming in to have your baby can be an anxious process. Going forward I will forward your care opinion to the Doctors and staff and remind them of the importance of showing patients respect and dignity. Again I apologise and I hope you are enjoying motherhood. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further concerns.

Kind regards

Susan McClarey

Thank you Susan for your reply.

I would like to reiterate that this should not take away from all the wonderful staff on antenatal, labour ward and post natal wards. I am very grateful to have had excellent care for all my children. I appreciate all the work you all do to deliver our babies.

Thank you
